An unlikely pair has found themselves at odds in the lead-up to the Oscars: Meryl Streep and Karl Lagerfeld.
On Thursday, Mr. Lagerfeld, the creative director of Chanel, told Women’s Wear Daily that after requesting a sexy prom dresses from the label, Ms. Streep backed out when she found another label — one that was willing to pay her for wearing its dress on the red carpet.
“A genius actress, but cheapness also, no?” Mr. Lagerfeld said of Ms. Streep, who was nominated for an Academy Award for the 20th time, for her role in “Florence Foster Jenkins.”
A representative for Ms. Streep quickly disputed Mr. Lagerfeld’s claims to The Hollywood Reporter, saying that it is against Ms. Streep’s ethics to take payment for wearing a designer’s gown.
Mr. Lagerfeld and Chanel apologized, with Mr. Lagerfeld explaining that he “misunderstood that Ms. Streep may have chosen another designer due to remuneration, which Ms. Streep’s team has confirmed is not the case.”
But Ms. Streep was not satisfied with the apology and issued a scathing statement accusing Mr. Lagerfeld of defaming her, her stylist and Elie Saab, the designer she chose to wear.
“Mr. Lagerfeld’s generic ‘statement’ of regret for this ‘controversy’ was not an apology. He lied, they printed the lie, and I am still waiting,” Ms. Streep said, referring also to Women’s Wear Daily’s decision to publish Mr. Lagerfeld’s original accusation.
She accused the designer of taking attention away from her record-breaking 20th nomination. “I do not take this lightly,” she said.
