User authentication failed (code 9) after installing updates

I have a server setup on windows 2012 which authenticates against a radius server. it's been working great, until today. I installed windows updates. suddenly all authentication attempts return User authentication failed (code 9). It also appears that it's not even attempting authentication against the radius server. I say this because I should see the attempt on the radius server, but now nothing. A test to the radius server with a test app is good.

I also have verified I can ping the radius server from the soft ether server.

any ideas?

if anyone ever sees this, the issue was on the radius server. for some reason it could not reach the vpn server. but it could reach the box with the test app

Did you configure Radius auth on the VPN client?
