Although connected - Office Network does not appear in Windows explorer

Post by edr » Wed Jul 25, 2018 5:17 pm

Here is the Situation:
1. Single office network comprised of several computers and a NAS.
2. Installed and setup Softether VPN Server on a windows 10 machine at the OFFICE according to Remote Access to LAN instructions
https://www.softether.org/4-docs/2-howt ... VPN_to_LAN
3. Setup Softether VPN client on remote laptop running windows 7
4. Connect to the VPN server on remote laptop running windows 7 successfully, although I do get the following warning
** Connected with NAT traversal - might be unstable **
5. The windows 10 machine at the OFFICE recogninzes there is a user logged in when I look at Manage VPN Server "localhost"

HOWEVER, I can NOT see the the OFFICE Network on my remote windows 7 computer in windows explorer. (Network discovery is TURNED ON)
Can anyone help me solve this issue?

Did you create the local bridge?
Right after the Win 7 PC Connects to the VPN does it get a popup saying it received an IP address?
If so does the IP address match the same subnet / Range of the server location?

The NAT-T warning is because you did not forward ports to the WIN 10 machine running the SE server. It should still work though.

Yes. Thank you. that was the case. Of course that leads to 2 more questions.
1. Should I set up the port forwarding so I do not get that warming?
2. Now that I can see my office windows 10 computer on the network. I can not see the other devices on the network such as the NAS. What can I do to allow access to the NAS from this connection?

Thank you in advance

When you said Yes. Do,you mean you recently created the local bridge and now you can see the Win10 or was it originally set up?

forwarding the port is up to you. IT IS supposedly more stable. I always forward my ports.

Can the win-10 machine at the office location see the NAS

Can you see the other devices / computers on the win7 while connected to the VPN or just the Win 10?

Creating the local bridge was the missing step and now I can see the WIN 10 machine. The WIN10 machine can see the NAS on the network. I can only see the WIN 10 machine.

How many conputers are on the office network. What are the OS WIn10, Win7 ??

Is the office network a domain or workgroup network.

The WIN10 machine at the office can see the NAS. Can it see all the other devices at the office.

Don't you create the localbridge with wifi adapter?
Localbridge doesn't work properly with wifi adapter.

Can you access the NAS by IP address?

@edr,

A. Check local IP of your NAS

1. Try pinging NAS from LAN connected windows peer using local IP
2. Try pinging NAS from LAN connected Softether server machine using same local IP. (if, server is windows. If it's linux, check IP allotments of your different NIC/TAPs)
3. Try pinging NAS from VPN connected windows peer using same local IP.

This can flag the point of mis-communication. Will be easy to troubleshoot.
