You can reach the server with windows gui, wich works with wine on linux.
You do not need third party

Depending on the protocol.
For OpenVPN, L2TP there are some Linux GUI's out there
For SE own VPN protocol, there are non as far as I know

I will mention that for L2TP/IPSec you may have some trouble finding a GUI if you want a simple PSK with a password setup in Linux. I managed to get a GUI working with OpenSwan, but it's buggy. I don't think strongSwan (the newest L2TP/IPSec GUI) allows for this, at least I wasn't able to find out how to get it to work.
