Chinese ISPs know you are connecting to a VPN

Post by shanghai » Sun May 19, 2013 9:11 am

Just a curiosity: If you are in China, and you connect to a VPN server, your ISP can see you connecting to a VPN, right? Wouldn't this raise questions? Can't they block the VPN server? Don't the ISPs have policies regarding bypassing the Great Firewall that could get you into trouble?

What's trouble?
Using VPN is not a crime.

I didn't say it was though. I said it can raise questions and bring more detailed examination upon you, leading them to find that you're bypassing their wall which I'm pretty sure it's illegal.

Here's the truth: yes, the Chinese ISPs can detect VPN packets on the network. China Telecom is my ISP, and they are surely hooked into the GFW. My connections get blocked daily, and they sometimes cut the whole connection.

The ORGANS monitor everything and block what they can't crack.

So I have to get new server IPs every day...

EDIT: The servers are blocked within a couple of hours, except for some Korean and Japanese IPs that seem to survive longer. The Chinese are aggressive in blocking the American, Canadian, and United Kingdom servers. <grin> That's discriminatory! I'm going to complain to the U.N...

Seriously: Anyone connecting in the clear needs to be careful and not engage in prohibited discourse - no porn, no anti-regime politics, no organizing protests, or sending documents to foreign newspapers. Do that kind of activity under cover of a VPN.
