Tried to make it as simple as possible, recently updated with lots of improvements.

hello. i actually have a iOS version but you have to separately download an openvpn client to use it as it doesnt come with VPN built in.

Hello all,

I have recently installed this onto my Android phone. I have a few queries which it would be great to get answered.

A little background first:

• I have been living in China a couple of years and as you will know, am forced to use a vpn to access many sites (Google, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook being the main ones but there are many others that are blocked).
• Because I am in China, quite a few VPN apps are themselves blocked and will not work at all. I have had subscriptions to most of the big ones (Nord, Pure, Proton, Windscribe, Iron Socket etc) and most I have cancelled because they all stop working at some point (become targeted and blocked).
• ExpressVPN has been the most reliable, although even its servers have become blocked from time to time. Normal service is normally resumed within a week or two. However for the last three months or so, ExpressVPN has become almost unusable, with connections using its client never succeeding, causing me to resort to using their OpenVPN profiles and an OpenVPN client on both Android and Windows instead. Sadly, in the last few weeks, even their OpenVPN profiles will not connect and consequently, I am looking to dump ExpressVPN and have turned my attention to VPN Gate as a potential solution.

So my queries are:

1. It appears that only UDP connections succeed from here in China. I presume TCP is blocked but could someone confirm that? Certainly, I have not been able to connect to anything via TCP.
2. When I select to see only available UDP servers, most times I am presented with only 3, 4 or 5 servers to choose from. The list is rarely much longer. Why is this, when there are clearly thousands of servers listed as UDP capable?
3. If I use the OpenVPN client (without the Totally Free VPN app) I can choose one of the many profiles I have saved locally and very likely achieve a connection to one or more - yet they are not in the list presented above. Why is that?
4. Usually, I find that I can only successfully connect to one or possibly two servers in this short list. The others will return a "Waiting for server reply". Why is this?
5. I notice that there is a 'Pro' version of the app on the Play Store. What extra features / benefits does this provide?

I have some additional queries about the VPN gate servers when using Windows that I will ask in a separate thread.

To be honest, I read an article that claimed that free VPNs are usually not that safe, but I guess it's more aimed at the companies, which provide them worldwide, rather than users who create them themselves. Thanks, for sharing it, I'm a bit bummed out I didn't find it earlier. Recently I was searching for a cheap VPN provider, and I went with Surfshark (as it was the most affordable option I can find). I have to say I'm not mad at all that I invested a bit of money since they have features I didn't know about before, and now I find useful (such as ad-block).

There are at least three VPNgate clients on the android play store that I found, there's probably more if you take a look.
