VPN traffic very slow as it crawls along
Hi I have a fresh install of Debian. only other software on it other then softether is webmin. it also has a fresh install of softether vpn server on it. when ever I connect to it, my internet traffic slows down to a very slow crawl. like early dialup speeds slower then 56 kbs. how can i correct this so that traffic runs at normal speed. I am somewhat new to softether so any help would greatly be appreciated.

here are the results from the vpn server:
here is from my laptop:
I included the whole output incase you needed anything else from the command outputs. I only have the 2 as my laptop and the vpn client system are the same machine. the vpn server is roughly 50 miles away.

Re: VPN traffic very slow as it crawls along
That's why it is so slow, the network loop kills it. Make a proper VPN, test it out from another PC on a different ISP.anwoke8204 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 21, 2025 12:56 pmI only have the 2 as my laptop and the cpn client system are the same machine.

Re: VPN traffic very slow as it crawls along
The vpn server is in a remote location approx. 50 miles away. it does NOT run on my local network. When we were running the Softether VPN server on a windows Server 2022 machine, it worked perfect and fast. once I brought a Debian VM on a Proxmox host online and moved the server there it has been this slow. it cant be an issue with Proxmox as the Windows Server resides on the same host.
im not sure how to run the other speed test listed above since the client device and the pc it sys to run it on is the same machine. the windows server had 3 network interfaces, the Debian server only has 1.

Re: VPN traffic very slow as it crawls along
It's confusing, I'll annotate the above-linked info for you.
#1 TrafficClient from your VPN server to the speed server
[VPN on/off irrelevant]
#2 TrafficClient from a VPN client to the speed server
[VPN on]
#3 TrafficClient from the client's PC directly to the speed server
[VPN off]
Average Throughput in Download Direction | 1,128,980,684 bps| 1.13 Gbps
Average Throughput in Upload Direction | 1,139,082,463 bps| 1.14 Gbps
CPU 5%
[note THREE lines ONLY, including CPU USAGE]

in number 3 from my laptop to the remote vpn server thats where I am getting the following
Average Throughput in Download Direction | 228,495 bps| 228.50 Kbps
Average Throughput in Upload Direction | 5,668,955 bps| 5.67 Mbps
cpu at 27%
fr the second one where it says to run from a client connected to the speedserver can it be the client on the vpn server?
