L2TP doesnt work on my plateform

Post by JeremyT » Tue Nov 25, 2014 9:52 pm

Hello from France guys!

Im trying to make a L2TP VPN on my business server. I need to acces my docs on my Android tablet from anywhere.
I worked with hamachi logmein since few months for my VPN but i don't like their solutions for L2TP. Doesnt work anyway. Too slow!
So i heard about you and im testing your solution: Softether.

First: Nice job! it' a beautifull soft.

So Softether is installed on:
Windows 2003 server SP2 x86. (small server already in my company when i was hired)
Softether is the last version (download today 11252014)
The server is behind a box with nat. Translation already did (see the picture)
It's work fine with softether client on windows7. I can join the network and use remote access without issues from outside.

But L2PT doesnt work at all. Each time, i can not connect. And i don't have any logs...
I tried so many setting, read the tutorial, the documents, look the forum, but im out of ideas.

tried to connect on wiko phone (adroid 4.1) and galaxy tab pro 10.1 (android 4.4)

The firewall and the nat translation are set like this.
UDP: 500, 5000, 4500, 1701
TCP: 443, 1194, 992, 5555

This is a view of my virtual hub and the IPsec page

Here a view of my session with softether client

finaly the android setting

If you need something else, tell me. Please help, i don't understand what im doing wrong.

Hello Colapig,

Thanks for your answer but i tried that to and it doesnt work.
Il have a doubt about the android setting. Should i put something in the ’id ipsec’ field and ’secret’ field on the vpn setting?
i just have the word ’vpn’ on ’preshared key’ field actually.

Regards

Port forward 500,4500 to your server.
enter login name@your hub; password; preshared key in your android phone. That's all.
check which port used for the connection(443, 5555)

I think It’s Windows 2003 the problem. I’ll try on another plateform. I have a wmware Windows 7 os on the serveur.

Refer to the menu, it doesn't recommend to use VM to install the server, since the virtual adapter would make your VPN server confused. Then, you can check your Windows firewall.

So i made a server on two differents devices on another network with nat translation on 4500&500 udp port.

Both of devices run on win7 64.
One doesnt work with L2TP protocole (i have a conflict on port 443) probably Teamviewer. Can't resolve it. Try to change the port of communication on Softether, but doesnt work. L2TP need port 443. Its a fact.

On the second device, i don't have a conflict on port 443 and it's work fine. Same setting.

So now my concern i'ts wind2003 on production network. I'll try to rebuild the server from the start. I let you know

I try again on my product network. Server installed on windows2003 SP2.
It doesnt work with L2TP

I dont know if it's a network issue (bad translation) or an OS issue (incompability with 2003 server or components)

I continue my searching.

Many cellphone carrier actively block L2TP traffic, and the protocol itself is brittle and sensitive to CGN, NAT, and port forwarding.

Using the native OpenVPN client for android with the SoftEther server is a better solution in almost all circumstances.

This might be wrong about server host name.

This is VPN Azure address.
Please use DDNS host name.
