What are common causes for a slow internet when VPN has been disconnected?

I have run VPN several times, and had SoftEther VPN (vpngate) working, however when i end a session and return to regular internet use my internet becomes very slow. Using Firefox to load even simple well known pages like DuckDuckGo or Google or twitter logon takes a very long time.

I have not been able to find the source of the problem. I usually solve the issue by completely uninstalling SoftEtherVPN (vpngate)

Open cmd, and then type route print after you disconnect the VPN, and see if there are any improper default routes.

Did you enable VPN Gate server mode?
