can't establish vpn connection from windows / macOS

Hi,

I've set up a virtual machine (Debian 10; Kernel Linux 4.19.0-16-amd64), pretty much just running SoftEther VPN.
I can connect and remotely configure from a windows machine using SoftEther VPN Server Manager (creating virtual HUBs, managing users, ...)

BUT when trying to connect with either windows (10) or macOS (10.15 Big Sur) built in vpn client software, I just get timed out.
L2TP is enabled.

Setting different pre-shared keys, using different virtual HUBs as default HUBs, logging in with user@hub, trying to log in via password or self signed certificate all didn't work.
Kind of at a loss what else to try.

I kindly hope someone can point me in the right direction.

// Edit //
Using SoftEther VPN Client works like a charm

L2TP requires UDP port 500 and 4500 to be open. Have you done that?
Also it does not support connections over IPv6.
