Error. SE Server in Docker, using OpenVPN Client.

Post by mshakurov » Mon Aug 05, 2024 9:43 am

! The SE VPN Client Manager successfully establishes a VPN connection with the SE VPN Server installed in the Docker container (from an image from the official SE repo).
### The OpenVPN client of the latest version issues an error : 'Server poll timeout, trying next remote entry...'

Details:
Windows 10, the latest, updated. The firewall is turned off, the antivirus is turned off.
Docker Desktop has been updated to the latest version, there are no special settings.
I perform the most basic actions, without any special sophisticated settings.
I'm installing the SE VPN Client on the same computer that Docker is running on.
Docker image of SE VPN Server pulled from official repository.
The SE VPN Server container has been successfully launched, with the correct parameters.
In the container, I successfully perform a "check" check using "vpncmd".
Next, all the actions described below are performed from the same computer on which Docker is located.
Using SE Server Manager, I successfully connect to the server (both via 127.0.0.1 and local 192.168.1.56), enable all necessary settings as described in the manuals (most settings are already enabled).
For the test, using SE VPN Client Manager, I successfully establish a VPN connection, on different ports: 1194, 5555, 443, 992. I use both 127.0.0.1 and 192.168.1.56.
At the same time, I always receive a message about issuing an IP address from the range specified in the settings of the Virtual DHCP Server.
Telnet verification also confirms the availability of all tcp ports (both 127.0.0.1 and 192.168.1.56). I don't know how to check UDP ports.
Using SE Server Manager, I export settings to an ovpn file.
I specify the correct IP in it, either 127.0.0.1 or 192.168.1.56.
I check the CA certificate in the container log, it matches the one in the ovpn file.
I upload this file to the OpenVPN client (latest version) on the same computer as the server.
When connecting with the OpenVPN client, I enter the correct username and password of the test user.
There is an error in the OpenVPN client log:

Server poll timeout, trying next remote entry...

I understand what you're hinting at :)))
I have a lot of interfaces.
I executed the commands you suggested with the OpenVPN services turned off (they are installed when installing the OpenVPN client)

ipconfig /all

Code: Select all

com.docker.backend.exe has reserved port 1194 for itself. Fix it or pick another port for OpenVPN.

I'm sure Docker was reserved not for its own needs, but just for the running SE container. When I stop the SE container, the port does not appear in the netstat list.

https://github.com/SoftEtherVPN/SoftetherVPN-docker
Not working: bridging to a physical Ethernet adapter
As it appears to be limited and buggy, remove it and install SE directly https://www.softether-download.com/files/softether/

WOW!
I have recreated/restarted the container many, many times, restarted Docker itself, turned on and off all host interfaces, overloaded the host computer itself.
And suddenly, unexpectedly, it is not clear why, it was possible to SUCCESSFULLY CONNECT using OpenVPN and on 127.0.0.1 and on 192.168.1.56, and with Android on the same network!!!

If there is an easy way to install an already builded SE binaries, which builded for Ubuntu?

There is a working build for Alpine in Docker.

But when building on Ubuntu 20.04, I "had to tighten the nuts" so that the building process would pass, but there are a lot of warnings in the build log. And this way builded SE server does not start, there are errors.

In addition, building on a thin VPS server with Ubuntu 20.04 is not appropriate way, the building will take too many resources.

For now, I will continue trying to somehow build and run on Ubuntu 20.04

Hello, although my knowledge of softether is limited, here is my advice for docker on windows. Keep in mind that docker on Windows creates a separate subnet with its own list of addresses, most likely this is why you could not connect to the server. By creating your container on the ubuntu server, you will not encounter any problems, but do not forget to correctly format the DockerFile so that the server is configured correctly when starting a new container.

Once again, I am convinced that I have not found a better free vpn server. SE is the best. And also, judging by the performance, it is better than all the paid ones that I have met. With Docker on Windows, apparently the problem was in some details and porridge of the virtual network adapters that Docker and HyperV created.
I have successfully tested SE using Docker on Windows, and today I am already enjoying my own VPN from mobile devices and from a Windows PC, wherever I am.
I found a good and simple guide on the Internet on how to install SE on Ubuntu, then I bought a cheap VPS server with Ubuntu, installed SE, configured it from Windows using SE Server Manager, and, voila, a ready-made, super-fast VPN Server.
By the way, the built-in VPN functionality in Windows 11 immediately allowed you to connect to SE. In Windows 10, the basic VPN cannot be connected, but there is a great SE Client Manager.
Many thanks to the talented authors of such a product (and of course, the main sponsor).

Please tell me what VPN speed your server gives to the client and what VPS configuration you took for it, if possible, please tell me the site

Internet channels in our country (Russia) are very powerful, direct access to EU countries is very fast. I opened a virtual server on a hosting in Amsterdam, they assigned me a server in London, UK. The access speed to this server, without and with SE VPN , could not be detected. Moreover, for some reason, uploading data using SE VPN is faster than without it.

The results of several speed measurements using vpncmd, with VPN turned on and off, are shown in the screenshot.

Access to YouTube is disabled in our country. Using SE VPN and the specified server, I tried three clients at the same time, watched three different 4k YouTube videos, with an explicitly specified speed. No one noticed any artifacts for 10 minutes; the video was in perfect quality.

I forgot to specify the net speed measured by the speedtest cli running on the vps server, without any restrictions.
