Extremely hard to use the VPN Gate portal – am I doing it wrong?

Post by Sergeek » Sun Oct 19, 2025 1:22 am

Greetings! Firstly, I want to salute the people behind the VPN Gate project. Such a humanitarian digital resource is invaluable in modern times. That's why I ask you not to interpret this topic as a complaint or rant. I appreciate what your group is doing. Yet I'm at a loss and don't know what to do.

I'm from Russia, and as you surely know, internet censorship runs rampant here. So a year ago I stumbled upon VPN Gate and started to use it through the OpenVPN Connect utility. From the very beginning I had problems. I could never connect to profiles provided by Mr. Daiyuu Nobori and still can't. In fact, only a handful of profiles did work for me. And when they did, they were on for a couple of days. In time, things got worse. VPN Gate portal and its original mirror stopped working (currently using the "saitama" one). Fewer and fewer profiles were functional, and a couple of days of work became a day. Recently, I can't even squeeze a single day out of a profile. Just an hour ago, I downloaded a working one after filtering through almost the entirety of the website... Only for it to break within minutes.

But Russians are one of the largest pieces of traffic on this portal. Obviously most of the user base has no problems with it. Then it means that I'm doing something wrong. I'm not a tech-savvy person, so I don't understand what. Please, can anyone advise me?

Yeah OpenVPN client reconnects every 10 seconds

Use SoftEther client instead of OpenVPN.
